Some parts of the manual don't work if you are using MAC, the auto run for the mac does not work, and once you get the instructions working, they are confusing, not detailed, and sequential. I bought this router for the promises of distances of a quarter mile even though I just wanted it to connect straight out the window about 75 yards a way in another building. Not only in the end did the router not even go the distance, the installation was thoroughly disappointing and not even remotely up to par with other brands. Then once you get it running the fan noise reminds of me my 1994, 486 computer. If you have a couple of hours to spend remembering the configuration old days where everything was manual, you don't mind that the range is no further than a normal router, you have over $250 to spend, and you don't want to hear the person on the phone because the fan is too loud then this router is for you.
so, I configured the BWRG-1000 not to broadcast the SSID. After years of living with a marginal, spotty WiFi signal from a decent Linksys Wireless-G router (50 mw power), we bought an Xbox 360 to watch streamed movies - didn't work well - barely had enough signal for low-res movies, and HD was only a dream. So, the signal strength just wasn't able to make it through the walls, metal air ducts and flooring with the Linksys (or others we tried). The minute I plugged in the Bountiful BWRG-1000, we all had decent signals, but still not a full 5 bars (as shown on Windows and XBox wireless strength indicators). The signal is reaching so far that I actually became worried that someone might notice and try to hack our network, since so many people can now access our network. The next day, I discovered the problem was actually a beta version of the Google Chrome browser running the speed test - NOT the Bountiful router at all. So, I decided to go back and get the Bountiful 13DBI directional antenna (good decision).
We now enjoy NetFlix HD streaming movies on the X-Box and I'm getting upwards of 11 Mb download speed consistently everywhere on my property (as measured on [.].)Oh, and I did experience one slowdown issue I first thought might be the Bountiful router. Until I discovered the Bountiful BWRG-1000 - a full 1,000 mw power (1 full watt). The problem is, the router and cable modem equipment is in my office upstairs on the far side of the house from our living room and den, where the TV resides (and where we use wireless PC's a lot). I also changed the wireless security setup to use a much stronger password and encryption, and added MAC address filtering. So, in short, now I get a great, secure wireless signal - everywhere I need it - in the house, back yard.Best of all, my original issue was fully resolved. Now I'm getting 5 bars. everywhere. In fact, my wireless signal is so strong that I'm getting a full strength wireless signal on my little Apple iPhone - over a block away. I called Bountiful's Support and after we couldn't find any real issue, they offered to replace the router at no cost.
So, I was very impressed with the responsiveness, attitude and support I received. The only thing I can say that's even remotely negative about this product is, it's fan makes as much noise as my desktop PC - and it throws off quite a bit of heat; understandable, since it's the most powerful wireless-G router allowed by law.
This machine is the top domestic router available today. Mine had the aditional long range antennas which give this critter a 13 db gain. However, and on the down side,it has not a reverse polarity or surge protection. This could be easily achieved by installing a Diode on the Positive(+)imput at the circuit board. Also the 5 volts DC power supply should be at least of 6 amperes capacity not four, as it comes with.Mine went dead after one year of operations. As the power supply went dead it reversed its polarity and burned the critter.Although theese handicaps, I reordered a new one today.
I guess if it worked it'd be great. Laptop hasn't lost its connection once.
The only way to get it back is rebooting the router. This sounds very similar to the issue another reviewer was having.
I got this a few months ago & my laptop constantly drops its wireless connection. Pretty disappointed in this one - I've hooked up my old DLink router which is probably worth about a tenth of what this one cost me & it's running like a champ.
An email to support has so far gone unanswered (sent it 5 days ago). No documentation online other than their manual.
I'm definitely asking myself why I blew all that money on this. Unfortunately for me, so far, it does not.
sgnal strength was to the maximum, and very important without any drop communication. excellent, worth every penny. just plug in, install both antenas and connect it to your router, we had 5 laptots working at the same time without any problem and we all were at different places. I bougth a Linksys wrt160 and the signal strength was midium to weak with drop communication. I returned after a week trial.
